Upper Lake (Bada Talab) – The Majestic Water Body of Bhopal

The Majestic Water Body of Bhopal

The Upper Lake, also known as Bada Talab, is one of the most iconic and picturesque landmarks in Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. A serene and expansive water body, it holds historical, cultural, and recreational significance, making it a must-visit attraction for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're seeking a peaceful escape or an opportunity to indulge in water-based activities, Upper Lake has something to offer everyone.

Overview of Upper Lake

Upper Lake is the largest man-made lake in Bhopal and is often referred to as the "lifeline of the city." It was constructed in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj, a renowned king of the Paramara dynasty, and is an engineering marvel of its time. The lake is spread across an area of around 36 square kilometers, with a length of approximately 8 kilometers and a width of 3 kilometers at its widest point. It is divided into two parts, with the smaller Lower Lake located just adjacent to it.

Upper Lake is not only a beautiful water body but also plays a vital role in the city's water supply, supporting the local population with freshwater. The tranquil waters, the surrounding hills, and the lush green landscape make it a serene and beautiful destination.
