Alathiyoor Hanuman Temple

 

The Alathiyur Hanuman Temple, located in Malappuram district, Kerala, is a revered spiritual site with a rich history that dates back over 3,000 years. Legend has it that the temple's chief deity, Hanuman, was installed by Sage Vasistha, one of the great sages of the Rig Veda. Although the temple is dedicated to Lord Sree Rama and Bharatha from the epic Ramayana, it is famously known as a Hanuman temple, highlighting the deep bond between Hanuman and Lord Rama.

Situated in the scenic village of Alathiyur, the temple is a spiritual center for devotees who come from far and wide to seek blessings. The temple complex is believed to have been under the governance of the Grama Namboodiri before being taken over by Vattath Raja, and eventually, during the Zamorin rule, the administration passed to the Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode, who continues to oversee it today.

The architecture of the temple is unique, with Hanuman's idol positioned adjacent to the main shrine of Lord Rama, slightly leaning to the left as if to listen attentively to his master’s instructions. This posture symbolizes the moment when Rama confides in Hanuman the secret phrase that would help him gain Sita's trust during his mission to Lanka. Devotees are often moved by the depiction of Hanuman as the embodiment of divine strength, unwavering devotion, and humility.

One of the most cherished rituals at the temple involves a platform commemorating Hanuman's legendary leap to Lanka. Devotees believe that leaping over a long granite stone on this platform will bring good health and prosperity, especially for their children. Special offerings at the temple include wet avil (flattened rice) and kadali plantain, which are favored by Hanuman.
