Babathan Shiva Temple
The oldest historical Shiva Temple located at Numaligarh in the Golaghat district of Assam is Baba than Shiva Temple. From the main town, Golaghat to Numaligarh Baba than Shiva Temple is at a distance of approximately 32 kilometre distance, the temple was established by Pitambar Kandoli during the 19th century and he was from the Bamun village. After the earthquake in 1897, the main idol and lingum from the Deoparbat temple was shifted to a new temple called Babathan Shiva Temple. This temple is located near the archaeological site of Deoparbat. Behind the establishment of the temple, there is a story saying that Pitambar Kandoli who established the Shiva temple was also a priest and once he saw a dream where he saw Lord Shiva who is a Hindu God was standing in front of him and telling him that the Lord Shiva had not bathed for a long time and directed Pitambar Kandoli to bathe him where the Shiva Linga and other idols have existed.
