Bela Church

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, fondly known as the 'Bela Church,' stands as a testament to faith and history in Bekal, Kasaragod district of Kerala. Built in 1890, it proudly holds the title of the oldest church in the Kasaragod district. This Roman Catholic Church, fashioned in the elegant Gothic architectural style, is now managed by the Mangalore Diocese.

Historical accounts reveal that due to the apprehension caused by Portuguese rule in Goa and neighbouring areas, numerous Konkani-speaking Catholics relocated to Kasaragod, where they erected this church to fulfil their spiritual needs. Renovated in 2001, the church lacks modern embellishments such as chandeliers or stained glass windows, contributing to its distinctive appearance and evoking a nostalgic charm.

Renowned for its miraculous statue of Mother Mary, the church exudes a timeless charm, inviting visitors to experience profound moments of reflection and prayer. The sacred caves within its premises, including one featuring a holy pond where the water never dries up are a major attraction of Bela Church.
