Betla National Park
Betla National Park, located in the Latehar district of Jharkhand in India, is one of the lesser-known national parks in the country. Still, it’s a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The Tiger Reserve forms a part of the Betla National Park. The total area of the tiger reserve is 1129.93 sq. km. It is one of the first 9 tiger reserves created in the country at the inception of ‘Project Tiger’, in India and the only one in the state of Jharkhand.
Project Tiger is a wildlife conservation program launched in India in 1973 to protect endangered Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris) and their habitats. The main objective of Project Tiger is to ensure the long-term survival of tigers in India by protecting their habitats, monitoring their populations, and promoting public awareness about their conservation.
Betla National Park, a.k.a. Palamau Tiger Reserve, is a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife species, making it a captivating destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Betla has a rich history that spans centuries. The park’s history is a fascinating blend of natural heritage, indigenous cultures, and colonial influences.
Betla National Park falls under the Indo-Malayan realm and is distinguished for its flora and fauna. The forest is home to various predators like Tigers, Leopards, Wolves, Wild dogs, and Jungle cats. Alongside them, the herbivores, including Elephants, Bison, Chital, and Mouse Deer, also inhabit this area. Notably, the initial tiger census through tracking pug marks was carried out in 1934 in the Palamau Tiger Reserve.
The best period for a Betla visit is from November to February, the winter months, characterized by enjoyable weather and increased wildlife activity. The park shuts down from June to September in the monsoon season due to excessive rain and floods.
