Jaisalmer, also known as the "Golden City," is famous for its beautiful buildings made of yellow sandstone and its lively desert traditions that have thrived for hundreds of years. One such place where traditions are preserved for the future generations to enjoy and relive history is the Desert Culture Centre and Museum.
The Desert Culture Centre and Museum showcases the rich heritage of the Thar Desert. The centre’s architecture is impressive, designed to blend in with the surroundings. It's mostly made of yellow sandstone, the same material used in many of Jaisalmer's stunning buildings.
All about the Desert Culture Centre and Museum
The museum was built by Mr N K Sharma in 1997. The museum offers an exciting journey through the history of Jaisalmer's desert culture. The Desert cultural centre and museum displays the art, craft and culture delightfully.
The museum has a wide collection of ancient artefacts. It has a collection of musical instruments well known in Rajasthan. Apart from this, it has a collection of mediaeval coins, Rajasthani jewellery, handicrafts and weapons.
The museum is maintained by the Jaisalmer tourism department. The museum also has traditional musical instruments and costumes of Rajasthani folk dance. Costumes of Maharaja and Maharani from the ruling times are displayed as a tribute to their contributions.
