Dombari Buru

Khunti: In the freedom movement, an incident similar to Jallianwala Bagh has happened in present-day Jharkhand. In an incident that happened 20 years before the Jallianwala Bagh incident, hundreds of tribals were surrounded and shot dead by British soldiers. This place is Dombari Buru of Murhu block area of ??Khunti district. 122 years ago, on 9 January 1899, the British surrounded innocent people in Dombari Buru and shot them dead. Lord Birsa Munda was holding a meeting with his 12 followers in Dombari Buru. People from dozens of nearby villages were also present in the meeting. Women and children were also among them. Birsa Munda was blowing the trumpet of rebellion against the British. The British got the news of this meeting of Birsa. The British soldiers stormed there and surrounded the Dombari hill from all sides and the British soldiers attacked the Munda people like a disaster. Without any notice, the British soldiers started firing indiscriminately. Birsa Munda, along with his supporters, fiercely confronted the British with traditional weapons. Hundreds of people were martyred in this struggle. However, Birsa Munda managed to escape from there by dodging the British. Only six people's names are recorded in the stone-pelting done at the said place. These include Hathiram Munda of Gutuhatu, Hadi Munda, Sigrai Munda of Bartoli, Bankan Munda's wife, Majhiya Munda's wife and Dundang Munda's wife. Local people say that about four people were killed in that struggle. People call Dombari Buru the Jallianwala Bagh of Jharkhand. After this incident, Martyrdom Day is celebrated every year on January 9 in memory of those killed.
