Ghagar buri chandi mata temple
Ghaghar Burhi is on the outskirts of Asansol city. Ghagar Buri Chandi Temple is located on Kali Pahari in Asansol., by the side of the National Highway (Bypass) in West Bengal, India.
It is a small shrine dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is the oldest temple of Asansol. Worship is held every Tuesday and Saturday. A country fair is held on 15 January every year. Animals are sacrificed as part of worship.The location of the Ghagar Buri Chandi temple is also attractive, as it is situated near the banks of Nunia river.
Ghagar Buri Chandi Temple was establised in 1620. The goddess named as Maa Ghagar Buri is believed to be one of the incarnationsof Maa Chandi- the mother goddess. The idol of goddess is establised in the form of Pindi which is always laden with the silver ornaments. The walls of the temple has numerous carvings that represents the traditional Bengali culture. Apart from the idol of goddess Ghagar buri the temple also houses shrine of lord Rama, Sita along with Lord Hanuman and Lakshaman. Ghagar Buri Chandi Temple has a unique and interesting story behind its existence. The story is about a poor priest who used to travelfor miles to work, once he got too tired from his work and decided to sleep in the forest for a while. In his dream, he saw a divinewoman approaching him, she gave him 3 stones and told him to not go anywhere and instead worship those 3 stones. When the priest woke up,he found those 3 stones in his lap. The middle stone was Ghagar Buri, to her left Goddess Annapurna and to her right Panchanan Mahadev.
