Maithan Dam

Maithon Dam, a prominent structure on the Barakar River, is situated in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India. Built under the supervision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Maithon Dam was specifically designed for flood control and generates electricity for the region. The dam is unique because it has an underground power station, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Spread over an area of 65 square kilometers, the reservoir, also known as Maithon Lake, is a panoramic spot that boasts tranquil waters and scenic surroundings. The name 'Maithon' translates to 'Mother's abode,' and the place is flanked by lush greenery and rolling hills. In addition to its functionality, the dam serves as an important tourist destination, attracting visitors with its captivating beauty and the range of activities it offers, like boating, bird watching, and lakeside picnics. The Deer Park and the bird sanctuary nearby are also prominent attractions. The well-maintained gardens and pathways leading to the dam provide serene spots to enjoy the natural ambiance.
