Mura Pûk
MURA PUK (Mura Caves) at the outskirts of Zote village near Champhai, Mizoram The origin of this cave is shrouded in mystery. When Zote village was resettled under Chief Laitea in 1899 these caves were already in existence. Originally, there were seven caves but now only four have survived. Legend has it that these caves were the hiding place from the gigantic eagle called 'Mura'. Mura was a monstrous and ferocious eagle. One of its talons is as big as the horn of a female mithun and the skin around its lower beak was big enough for a man's cap.Mura would perch on the roof of a house covering both sides of the house with its wings, clearing out the house from the back with its tail and then preyed on the people who ran out of the house. When the attack of Mura is imminent, people scooted off to the caves for refuge from the feral predator. The Caves had a massive door-like cover made of stone.
