Nalla Thanni Theevu
The island is so named due to the availability of fresh water within a depth of 5 m. A temple devoted to the local deity of Lord Muneeswaran is located within the island. Every year, during March, the temple festival attracts around 200-300 pilgrims from the nearby fishing villages.The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park consists of 21 islands which are divided into four groups. Nallathanni Tivu is part of the Vembar group of islands. The island is marked by the presence of fringing reef.The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is in the process of manual removal of Prosopis julifera (Mesquite tree/Seemai Karuvelam or Velikathaan) an invasive species and is now planting native species like Thespesia populnea (Indian Tulip tree / Poovarasan) for island protection and conservation purpose.
