The complex commemorates the women of Manipur who fought valiantly during the Nupi Lal (literally meaning Women's War) in 1939, a time when women played a pivotal role in resisting British colonial policies.The Nupi Lal was a women-led uprising that took place in 1939 in Manipur against the British colonial administration’s economic policies, particularly the imposition of taxes on rice and food scarcity that affected the local population.The conflict saw the women of Manipur, especially from the Meitei community, protest against British policies that threatened their livelihood. This event is one of the first organized women's movements in India and is a landmark moment in the history of women's empowerment in the region.The women of Manipur, defying the norms of their time, mobilized in large numbers and demanded the British to lift the ban on the export of rice and reduce the tax burden. Their non-violent protest and acts of civil disobedience were met with brutality, and many women lost their lives in the conflict.
