Ranipur-Jharial

Ranipur-Jharial, located about 104 kilometers from Balangir, is an ancient archaeological site often referred to as "Soma Tirtha." This site is a treasure trove of historical and cultural heritage, boasting a collection of over 50 temples that were constructed during the 9th and 10th centuries. The temples here showcase a unique blend of Hindu and Jain architectural styles, reflecting the rich artistic and cultural diversity of the time. One of the most notable structures at Ranipur-Jharial is the 64 Yogini Temple, an open-air circular shrine dedicated to the worship of yoginis, who are considered powerful female divinities in tantric traditions. This temple is one of the few extant yogini temples in India, and it features intricately carved stone images of the 64 yoginis arranged in a circular formation. The open design of the temple, combined with the exquisite carvings, creates a mystical and serene atmosphere that attracts both pilgrims and scholars. Another prominent temple at Ranipur-Jharial is the Indralath Temple, which is one of the tallest brick temples of its time. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity and craftsmanship of the ancient builders.
