Saifee Villa
The Dandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, was a significant movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in protest against the Salt Act imposed by the British Government. Supporters of the march embarked on a journey of approximately 241 miles, walking from Sabarmati Ashram to the Dandi seashore in Gujarat, India. This act of Satyagraha involved breaking the British prohibition on salt production.
Located in Dandi, Navsari, the Saifee Villa Gandhi Memorial Museum holds great historical importance. It was at this site that Mahatma Gandhi spent the night on April 5th, 1930, prior to the momentous Salt Satyagraha event against the Salt Law enforced by the British colonial government. This museum also tells the story of Gandhi’s life and his contribution to the freedom struggle. Originally, this building belonged to His Holiness Syedna Taher Saifuddin Shaheb, the 51st religious leader of the Dawoodi Bohra Community. Syedna Taher Saifuddin Shaheb, along with his family, vacated the house and moved to Mumbai, symbolically relinquishing it for the cause.
Jawaharlal Nehru, the inaugural Prime Minister of India, took the initiative to dedicate this building to the nation and preserve it as a national heritage due to its historical significance. The museum houses a collection of rare photographs and personal belongings of Mahatma Gandhi.
