Sanchi Stupa No. 2

Sanchi Stupa Number 2, located in Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh, India, is one of the most significant Buddhist monuments reflecting gemstones of ancient Indian architecture. This stupa, less frequented than the Great Stupa, allows for a more serene exploration of Buddhist art and architecture. Established by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, it stands as a symbol of the spread of Buddhism in India. Unlike the Great Stupa, Stupa Number 2 does not have a grand hemispherical dome but is known for its intricately carved balustrades and the harmony of its structure that blends naturally with the surrounding landscape. The carvings depict scenes from the life of Buddha and his previous incarnations known as Jataka tales. It showcases early Buddhist art and iconography, with the motifs and designs indicating a rich syncretism of Indian culture.
