Nestled in the breathtaking Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Tungnath Temple stands as the highest Shiva temple in the world, perched at an elevation of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). This ancient abode of Lord Shiva radiates spiritual energy and offers a profound pilgrimage experience. it is a Third Kedar among the Panch Kedar of Uttarakhand, Where the Lord Shiva Arm’s worship.
Believed to be over 1000 years old, Tungnath holds immense historical and religious importance. Legend has it that the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile and is considered one of the Panch Kedar, a group of five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Despite its remote location, Tungnath showcases impressive architecture. The temple is constructed using local stones and wood, reflecting the ancient Himalayan style. The sanctum sanctorum houses a black marble idol of Lord Shiva, exuding an aura of divine tranquillity. Reaching Tungnath involves a scenic trek of about 3.5 kilometres from Chopta, a picturesque hamlet known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.“
