It is run by the South Western Railways and displays vintage steam locomotives, railway carriages, inspection cars, telecommunication equipment and other objects related to the railways. The museum also houses a gallery, Chamundi gallery, that exhibits photographs of Indian railways through the ages. The second such museum in the country, after the National Railway Museum in Delhi, this museum, situated close to the city railway station, offers a glimpse into the monumental edifice that is the Indian Railways. The locomotives on display include a bright red Austin rail motor car, an Austin car adapted to run on rails; several inspection cars; an ES-506 model steam locomotive; meter-gauge rail bus; Maharani Saloon carriage; royal coaches; and a YP 2511 steam engine. The ticket counter as well as the museum shop is housed in an inspection car. A toy train offers a train ride for the visitors to the museum. There is also a play area for children housed within the premises of the museum
