Archaeological Site Museum, Arcot

The Department of Archaeology, Government of Tamilnadu is exhibiting many antiques from the excavations is being exhibits in their museums to bring the limelight of history of Tamilnadu. An Archaeological site museum is situated in Arcot Town. In the year 1698 CE Zulfiquarkhan (1690-1703 CE) one of the commanders of Moghul dynasty, inducted by Emperor Aurangazeb, had administered Moghul rule from Arcot. During his reign Arcot became the capital of the Carnatic region and most of the administrative buildings were constructed. The last Nawab of Arcot was Ghousekhan (1842-1855 CE). By the act of Doctrine of Lapse, Lord Dalhousi brought the Carnatic region under the British rule. The Museum was created in the year 1982 with an objective of revealing the influence of Islamic Art, Architecture and Culture in this region.The museum exhibits the artifacts taken from excavations in Vellore District. It exhibits many historical photographs to the visitors. 360 rare artifacts are exhibited in this museum. The publications of Department of Archaeology are available for sale at reasonable price. The working hours of museum are 10 am to 5.30 pm except on Fridays and Government holidays.

Arcot Fort

The debris of palaces , ruined moat, mosque and other constructions had become very old which was constructed by Sadhathulkhan, the then Nawab of Arcot. It was constructed with stucco and bricks in the 18th century. Most of the constructions had gone ruined. The pond near the fort, the worship place of mosque, a well near the fort alone are left now. It covers an area of around 10 K.Ms. water from Palar is designed in such a way, to reach this place and reach back to palar is one of the marvelous features of this design. It is also known as Alampana Fort.

Church Of South India (CSI)

This church in Ranipet is one of the major churches in the section and is approximately 150 years old. Close up to the church is a necropolis where in the dead bodies of the deceased British soldiers have been masked in the event of Sepoy Mutiny.

Delhi Gate

Delhi Gateis part of the fortification of Arcot, a town which is located on the banks of Palar river in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, India. In the 18th century Sandha Sahib and Mohammed Ali fought for the title of Nawab in which the Britishers entered the feudal in the name of favouring Mohammed Ali.The Britishers entered Arcot and driven away Sandha Sahib who is the enemy of MohammeArcotGated Ali. The army was headed by Robert Clive. This initial success of Robert Clive led them spread the colonial rule all over India later. The building was constructed to celebrate the success of Robert Clive, hence it is called as Delhi Gate. The entrance of Delhi Gate is constructed with two storeys, one as the ground floor and the other as the first floor. The ground floor was constructed to serve as place to secure armory. The first floor was designed to shelter the warriors from where they can view the enemies and attach them using the fixed tankers in the first floor. With 4 feet high, the building was constructed with strong bricks and stucco is praiseworthy.

Kanchanagiri Hills Shiva Temple

Kanchanagiri hills is famous destination for the people of Ranipet which is 1500 feet elevation and housed small Shiva temple and Murugantemple.The famous ‘bell rock’ in Kachanagiri is a sensation among the people of Ranipet. Kanchanagiri is surrounded by a range of mountains and the middle there is a plain of 60 acres, and a big pond in the centre. Lord Shiva’s favorite cassia abounds the Kanjanagiri. One can see many Suyambhu lingams. It is believed that they are the Siddhas who lived there, thousands of years before.The altar ‘Shakthi Peedam’ has a Siva Lingam surmounted by the seven-headed snake. The altar adorned by Nagalinga flowers is the best part of Kanjanagiri. The temple is shaded by the props of the banyan trees that are the 1000 years old, extending up to several acres. There is also perennial rivulet near the temple.

Mahendra Vishnu kiraham Rock Temple

Mahendravadi is a small village in Arakkonam taluk in Ranipet district of Tamilnadu. The old name of the village was Mahendrapura, probably derived from the Pallava king Mahendravarman I.MahendraVishnukiraham rock carvings is one of the notable historic monument.This monument is preserved by the Archeological Survey of India . It is a very ancient rock temple of Tamilnadu. This rock carvings were built during the period of King Mahendravarman from 600-630 AD. The Grantha script inscription of Mahendra Varman period ensure that it is MahendraVishnukiraham is named after the King MahendraVarman.The carvings are done in a monolithic stone in an open space is one of the special features of the monument with a couple of full pillars and one half pillar, the same temple is constructed that attracts the visitors. Only Podhigai is carved in the pillars look very simple.The shrine in the rear is flanked with two dvarapalas, both shown in the same posture, resting one hand on their waist and the other hand pointing towards the shrine. Both wear their yajnopavita in nivita style. The shrine is project outward with its adhisthana (base) composed of reduced number mouldings; jagati, kumuda, kantha and pattika. Rock-cut steps are provided for entry into the shrine. Inside the shrine is placed an image of Narasimha, which of course is a later installation. This shrine is of great importance as it is among very few temples, from Mahendravarman period, dedicated to Vishnu.

Raja Rani Monument

Raja Rani monument is situated in Ranipet town, on the banks of the Palar river. There are 2 towers built in the memory Raja Desingh and his beloved wife Rani Bai.History reiterates that Raja Desingh refused to pay tax to British and hence British raided Arcot and killed Raja Desingh. In memory and love of her husband, Rani Bai committed Sati and died. To honour the sacrifice of Rani Bai, Arcot Nawab Sadat-ul-lahkhan built this Monument on the opposite Bank on palar and in memory of her sacrifice named the town on the opposite bank as Ranipet and hence the name of the Town.

Ratnagiri BalaMurugan Temple

The Ratnagiri Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. There are two forms of the deity in this temple, one is Lord Thirukkolam, seen with his wives Valli and Devasena and the other is Lord Gurukkolam. The idol of the main deity BalaMurugan was installed in a chariot which is made of granite. The garbhagriha is made of granite and is modeled according to the Chola architecture. The wall surrounding the shrine has small idols of Ganesha, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, Durga, and Chandikeswarar. There are 2 temples for the Lord Vinayaka, one on top of the hill and another at the bottom of hill.This temple was built in the 14th century by ArunagiriNathar. It was renovated in the year 1980 by BalaMuruganadimai Swamy. The temple boasts a huge tower at the entrance. One of the special features of this temple is that the poojas are conducted in Tamil instead of common Sanskrit.

Sholingur Perumal Temple

Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple is located at downhills in the Sholinghur Town is also part of ThirukkadigaiDhivyaDesam. Since it is located at town, the temple is also called Town Temple. Sri Yoga Anjaneyar Temple

There is a temple on the top of this hillock, for Yoga Anjaneya. The main entrance to this temple is also North facing. The entrance to the main shrine of lord Yoga Anjaneya is west facing. Lord Anjaneya in his Yoga posture is facing west - facing Lord Yoga Narasimha in the other hillock. Another specialty of Yoga Anjaneya is that he has four hands., Chaturbujaroopa. He wears the Chanku [conch] and the Chakra [wheel -Sudershana] said to have been given by Lord Yoga Narasimha himself. Through the hole in the wall opposite to the Yoga Anjaneys’ssannidhi, one can see the temple Gopuram of Lord Yoga Narasimha. The temple tank [pushkarani] is known as HanumanthaThirtham.

Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple(periyamalai)

Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple is a famous pilgrimage spot in sholinghur,Ranipet District in the State of Tamil Nadu in India and one of the 108 Divyadesham (Lord Vishnu temples), with Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy, the 4th Avatharam of Lord Vishnu (Sriman Narayana) as the presiding deity and Sri AmirthavalliThayar as his consort on top of a 1305 foot hill called periyamalai (big hill). Thirupar Malai

ThiruparMalai is being preserved by the Indian Archeological Department. It is located in the Vilapakkam village limits, a road from Arcot to Kannamangalam – 6 K.Ms southeast direction from Arcot.A Pallava period cave temple is found in the southern part. The cave is built (engraved) with 6 fully sculptured pillars and two partially sculptured pillars.The roof of the cave is filled with the paintings of Jain Thirthangarar. The stone bed Jains and the debris of age old brick constructions are found here. A beautiful Goddess Ambigai – Yakshini image is engraved here. This sculpture is proud to have sculptured during the period of king Thanthivarman. The King Raja Raja had offered the village named Koorambadi to the Jain monks as an offering which is inscribed in the stone engravings. The protruding statues are beautifully seen sculptured here.

Tirumalpur ArulmiguManikandeswarar Temple

It is about 12 Kms away from Kanchipuram while traveling towards Arakkonam. This Sthalam is originally called as "Thirumaarperu" (Thirumaalperu) and as the years passed, it is now called as "Thirumaalpoor". This ancient temple is located on the banks of Virudhasheera river (Palaru) and is said to be more than 1500 years old. The temple is said to have been built by King Paranthaka Chola-I. It is believed that devotees who pray to Lord Shiva here would have no threats from enemies and will also see favourable outcome in litigation cases. It is also believed that by worshiping the lord here, devotees can seek salvation.

Valeeswarar Temple

The inscriptions of this the village as Thiruvural and the name of the deity as Valeeswarar and MummalaiIswarmudayar. An inscription of Rajendra Chola-I registers the gift of 32 cows for the abhisheka with milk for the welfare of the king’s mother named TribhuvanaMaadeviyar and another inscription infrorms the bronzes of Umamaheswara and Vinayaga were being worshipped in this temple.The village used to be known as Tiruppamudhal and the deity MahadevarayaMummalaiEaswaranVikrama Chola (1123 A.D.) Rajendra-III. Inscriptions are found on the west and northern wall of the Karuvarai.
