Government Museum

The Government Museum of Bharatpur houses artefacts collected from the erstwhile Bharatpur princely state.

Established on 11th November 1944, the Government Museum, Bharatpur is located in the centre of the historic Lohagarh Fort. Artefacts collected from various parts of the Bharatpur princely state were initially displayed in a public library under the supervision of HH Maharaja Sawai Brijendra Singh in 1939.

Shri Ganga Maharani Ji Temple

The Ganga Mandir, which resides in the heart of the city of Bharatpur is one of the most beautiful temples in Rajasthan. In it lies the magnificent deity of Ganga Maharaj made of pristine white marble. Maharaja Balwant Singh started constructing this temple in the mid-19th century. However, he had a very unique request that required all the affluent inhabitants of the city to donate one month’s pay to help towards the temple’s creation. While the architecture is unique the Bansi Pahadpur stone of almond color is also a matchless thing. The Gong of the temple is of so great a resonance that it can be heard from distance.

Ganga Mandir Marg

It is said that the year 1845 saw Maharaja Balwant Singh begin this temple’s construction. The construction process of the temple was quite unique in that all the employees of the state and many other affluent locals were asked to contribute towards the building of the shrine. It is said that around 9 decades were taken to build the temple. Once the temple was complete, Brijenra Singh, Balwant Singh’s fifth descendant placed an idol of the goddess Ganga in the temple. It is from thereon that the temple came to be known as the Ganga Mandir or temple.

Deeg Palace

A huge arch-shaped doorway marks the entrance of the Deeg Palace. The gateway is enormous in height exhibiting Rajasthani architecture. The walls of the door are engraved with detailed floral designs. The first floor has alcoves that make the frame for numerous windows while the second floor has small corridors with pillars.

 

There are many edifices on the premises of the Deeg Palace which are decorated with gardens, trees and red sandstone pavements. The notable mansions called Bhawans include Keshav Bhawan, Suraj Bhawan, Nand Bhawan, Gopal Bhawan, and Kishan Bhawan. The palace houses numerous fountains.

Bandh Baretha Safari

The King of Bharatpur had reserved 200 square kilometers of Bandh Baretha before the independence of India as a Wildlife Sanctuary. This is old wildlife reserve sanctuaries which are currently under the administration of the Forest Department. The construction of the dam on Kukund River was started by Maharaj Jaswant Singh in 1866 AD and completed by Maharaj Ram Singh in 1897 AD. Tha Basant Darbar Mahal was built by Maharaj Kishan Singh and is the private property of the Bharatpur royal family.

Jawahar Burj

Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj stand erect within the glorious ramparts of the Lohagarh Fort. This site was considered as a coronation site for all the Jat rulers. They were built by Maharaja Suraj Mal to commemorate his victories over the Mughals and British. These two places are considered as victory towers and, are decorated with deteriorating frescoes. It is different from the other forts in the state in that there is no flamboyance associated with the fort. However, it generates an aura of strength and magnificence.
