punaura dham

Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi Temple is also known as Punaura Dham in Punaura village of Sitamarhi district of Bihar. It is believed that Mata Sita was born at this place. There is a story related to this that once there was a severe famine in Mithila and the priest there advised King Janak to plow the field. When King Janak was ploughing, an earthen pot came out of the ground, in which Mother Sita was in an infant state.

Haleshwar Sthan

This is 3 Kms. noth-west of Sitamarhi. As the myth goes, the king Videha had founded a temple of Lord shiva on the occasion of Putra Yeshti Yajna. His temple was named as Haleshwarnath temple. This place is believed to be very ancient as the tale goes that Mithila king Janaka who was the father Sita from Ramayana built this Shiva temple. The stone Shivling at the sanctum is belived to be the original image through which the king invoked Lord Shiva.
